I like this hotel which is excellent but I feel that some work would be necessary to keep the rooms at the right level.

Staying at theHotel Monaco is like being in the Italy of forty years ago -- the hotel is elegant, the concierge is charming, the desk personnel are courteous and helpful, the restaurant offers wonderful food served by experienced and attentive waiters. The Hotel offers a respite from the hustle of the tourist-filled streets of Venice.

Great experience.

We traveled to other areas in Italy on this trip and stayed in similarly rated hotels as this and in our opinion the price of the Breakfast Buffet at 35 Euros per person was very surprising and was not very inviting when considering available alternatives in the area. We realize that this is an upscale hotel but it would have been nice if you featured some less expensive alternatives that made it more attractive to dine in at the hotel. This is the only critique we have during our stay as you can see from our responses above.

I didn't understand how to regulate the temperature in the bedroom, it was very hot so we had to open the windows to make it cooler. A notice of the heating regulator could be very useful ...

Room small but adequate. Toiletteries were not replaced on a daily basis. Pillows were uncomfortable. Some staff not overly helpful.

This is a very nice, comfortable and enjoyable hotel. The staff is very attentive and professional. But it is a pitty that such a high ranked hotel does not offer a breakfast buffet, the only minus.

We had a nice upgrade to a comfortable suite.
the airco of the room was not working.

Excellent experience; wonderful room. Two recommendations/complaints:
The pillows are rocks that are unfit to sleep on. It is difficult to believe that a 4-star (or whatever) hotel would provide pillows of such low quality/comfort.
Our room cried-out for a comfortable lounge chair. All we had were two attactive, but spartain straight-back chairs.
On the marginal side, the bed was not of 4-plus star quality -- rather hard and it "squeaked" when one got in/out or rolled over.
Still -- a superb hotel with excellent service in an incredible location.

During the last 40 years I have stayed at the Danieli, Lido Exselsior as well as the Cipriani but
I prefer the Monaco and Grad Canal as the most convinient hotel when we travel to Venice
The Restaurant Terace is the Best in Venice

Lack of wifi capability in the rooms is not satisfactory.
Some of the waiters thought they were more important than the guests

Superb location. Lovely deck on the Grand Canal. Nice public space. Tasteful rooms. Courteous and knowledgeable staff. Not cheap.

This is a wonderful hotel that delivers on all it promises. I expected more attitude from the staff, but they were great!
The quality and size of my twin bed is something I am loathe to complain about, but feel I must. Visitors from North American, in particular, I think, don't have this custom of assuming that all a sole occupant requires is a twin bed for themselves to save space, and it was hard to adjust. There was a board in between the mattress and the frame, which might have helped my back, but, I do not have back problems. Especially for the cost of the room, which I would normally never indulge, the bed itself is the thing that I would not return to in this establishment. Housekeeping staff was top shelf and never made me feel like I have to leave the room so they can get their work on time for their shift.

the cost should include use of a computer for quest as most other hotels we have stayed not $9.00 for 30 minutes. At the prices charged that should be complimentary. The breakfast was a joke and when we ordered eggs and sausage they were not good at all.

Quality of breakfast cooking - eggs in particular - is quite poor. The dinner menu is good quality but rather old fashioned and French which we found a bit strange in Venice.

Seemed to be no wi-fi available.

The rooms were horrible and the bed was uncomfortable and lumpy. The location was great, but the lobby did not match the picture on the website. I have stayed at hotel monacos in the united states and they have been wonderful. This hotel did not hold up to it's reputation.
I would only recommend for its location to the shops.

My daughter lost her teddy bear of 20 years. The maid must have gathered it in the sheets. We reported it and recieved a bear that was not ours. We are still hopeful ours will turn up. My daughter is brloken hearted. Please keep trying.

Every other hotel in Italy was excellent. I have never stayed in a hotel of this expense and had such poor service. The facility itself is attractive, although overpriced for what it offers. However, every interaction with the Concierge and front desk left me feeling that "I was not good enough to stay in their hotel". If my money was good enough for them to take at almost $600- per night, I would think they could answer my questions without a snear or disparagement. I wound up disliking Venice, but I think it was primarily the hotel.

Overall I was pleased with the hotel. However, we noticed a very unpleasant smell in the room the second day. We were too tired to request a room change and were leaving in the morning so we did not say anything. For this reason I am somewhat concerned about recommending the hotel to others.

Advise travellers of amenities waiting for them.
1. Free boat pass for 3 days (could have prevented on purchasing upon arrival)
2. Free pass to casino
3. Free 10 % discount card for selected shops.

the reception was disorganized and dirty, the staff had a very bad attitude, breakfast was a croissant and coffee, restaurant menu was very very limited, room was mediocre and didn't reflected the 5 star hotel label.
We upgraded rooms right away to a superior suite for $1000/night. At the time of the change we were told a price but at check out the price was increased. We are disputing the charges.

Because of the bad weather, hotel concierge kindly checked the air port was fanctioning or not. It was a big help. Thank you very much! I'll be back to you next year.

If in need to use the Internet, such a service is provided by the hotel but at a cost. I can understand that there could be a risk of over-use verging on abuse in case such a service were to be provided for free. Yet, when considering that it is a four-star-hotel, I would have appreciated that at least the first 10 or 15 minutes had been free of charge.

Surprised to be charged an additional E81 for breakfasts on checking out as no indication seen that only continental breakfast was included apparently (did not appear to be notified on website), especially in view of high room rates. Service somewhat offhand. 'Yes' suggestion above qualified accordingly.

The location and service were wonderful. The room was rather small.

This is the best hotel I have ever stayed at, we had an excellent time!! It was stunning in every way and I cant wait to come back to Venice and stay there again!

top

***** Five stars! A wonderful experience. The only disappointment was the additional charge for Internet. At the price of these rooms, free WiFi in the rooms would be appreciated. This is just a great place and the location is perfect. If we return to Venice, we wouldn't consider any other hotel!

top

Elegant guest rooms and public spaces. Breakfast on the terrace with gondoliers next to us and a view of San Giorgio Maggiore, Santa Maria della Salute, and the Dogana Museum was magnificent.

top

The hotel was beautiful and clean. Right in the heart of everything. We would stay again in a heartbeat!!!

This is our third stay at the Hotel Monaco and Grand Hotel. It has the perfect location in Venice. Eating breakfast on the terrace overlooking Salute and the Grand Canal has to be one of life's great experiences. The rooms are not huge but very tastefully decorated and the bathroom is immaculate. The air-conditioning is some of the best we have experienced - and we needed it in July. The hotel is not cheap but there are some good deals to be had if you look out for them. We have stayed elsewhere in Venice but nowhere else has compared with this hotel.

I definitely recommend this hotel, for its comfort, excellent location and luxury. Nevertheless and for an hotel of this category there were a few disappointing issues:
- Personal in the “concierge” area are very professional, helpful and speak a handful of languages while those in the “reception” area are mostly unfriendly, not helpful at all and have a poor English.
- The “continental breakfast” that is included in the price of the room is very poor for this kind of hotel (bread of distinct qualities, orange juice, coffee and commercial jam and butter). If you feel like having fruit, cheese or scrambled eggs you have to pay (ej. normal scrambled eggs 8€/per person).
- The hotel offers a “free-trip” to the Murano Island on a private boat. Off course that one wonders that if they charge you for scrambled eggs, why would they offer you a 30 min. trip to the Murano Island on a private boat? The boat docks on a private pier that belongs to a Murano glass store. A very well dressed employee comes to get you and will show you how they work with the Murano glass in the factory and then will show you the store. So what initially was a free-visit to the Murano Island is indeed bait so you go to this particular and extremely expensive store (all other stores in the Murano Island sell the same kind of pieces by half the price). In the case you don’t buy anything they ask you if you want to go to the island for a walk: if you say yes, they’ll show you way out (the initially very friendly employee is not so friendly anymore) but careful because you will have trouble finding the “free” boat ride back to the hotel since it is a private pier!!!

We used to stay at the Bauer Hotel but from now on it is going to be Hotel Monaco

top

it has excellant location on grand canal and very close to San Marco Square.

Rooms are clean and tidy but
quality of the beds (in a suite) was terrible
suuspect mattresses are old and have needed replacing for a while...
In general its looking a bit 'tired'.
Service in the resturant/breakfast can be improved
Service on the terrace in the afternoon - terrible
Good news- Concierge and front desk- responsive, informative, friendly & efficient.

Dear,
For the breakfast my opinion is that there has been taken into account that there is a lot of people subject to diet problems and want to eat at breakfast:
* light yoghourt
* light spreadable cheese
* light jam
Yours truly,

We will come back to this hotel with great pleasure and recommend it to our friends.
The only suggestion we might make is that we would prefer a wider choice for the breakfast.
Thank you and kindest regards from the Côte d'Azur in France

The cost of this hotel can only be justified by it's excellent location.
Rated by any other standard it is severely overpriced in my opinion.

rate/quality = ok
continental breakfast = minimum, one has to pay every surplus like eggs, fruit, cheese, etc
location = wonderfull

We very much enjoyed our stay. The location is superb and the terrace bar/restaurant is fantastic. In general the staff were very good, but we did have a somewhat grumpy receptionist checking us out. The common areas were lovely. The room was slightly on the small side but very well equipped. We would definitely stay there again.

We had a very good and pleasent 4 days vacation on Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal, many thanks for all staff, when we were leaving fro the hotel we were planning to come again asap.

Stayed in the Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal for 3 nights last week (10-13 July 2008). The hotel was everything I expected and more!
The location is excellent and I did not expect to be so close to St Marks Square. The website states it is a short walk and they were not wrong. As you leave the hotel main entrance you have the famous Harrys Bar to your right (about thirty feet away!)and turn left you have all the famous designer brand shops. Walk about 100 yards up this alley, turn right and your about thirty seconds away from entering St Marks square.
But that is not all with the location as you then have the large terrace in the summer months to eat your meals with majestic views of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the island of San Giorgio. Eat and watch the traffic of the grand canal drift by! You are also about thirty seconds walk from the main boat services for the airport and also the Vaparetto. Gondola services are right by the terrace so sit and watch as they are prepared by the gondolianers (oarsmen) for the days cruises.
San Marco is the hub of venice, where everyone wants to be and what better to have a hotel right next to it all, but have the privacy of your own terrace where no one can walk past you like the other hotels.
We did not eat lunch or dinner at the hotel but breakfast was continental which was included in the price. The waiters/waitresses were extremely professional and I believe could teach a thing or two to some over in England! I have read on some other websites that the staff were on occasions not welcoming or helpful and sometimes rude - both my wife and myself never saw that - in fact quite the opposite. The concierge was extremely helpfull often giving good advice and very approachable. He organised a complimentary private boat taxi to the Island of Murano (which the hotel provide free of charge!) which came direct to the hotels terrace! The reception staff were also very professional, polite and helpful. Even before I arrived I emailed them with a load of questions about the transport system, trips to the islands and questions about the hotel and I was very pleased how helpful they were in replying to my questions over email.
The rooms were smaller than some hotels, but you do have the option of upgrading so in essence you get what you pay for. Nevertheless, we had a double standard room which was clean, comfortable bed, TV with SKY TV to view, chairs and air con. The bathroom was above average with marble throughout and again very clean. The room was cleaned and bed linen changed daily.
Also of note is what else is thrown in at present when you book a stay (we booked the 3 day stay at a good discounted price) - TWO free 72 hour public transport tickets for the vaporettos which were 31 euros each and a definite requirement for travelling around venice and its islands. And you can get to the Lido, Murano, Burano, Torcello with these tickets which you can use as much as you want in the 72 hour period. Free tickets for the Casino with 10 Euros each to spend, free box of authentic Venetian biscuits and for special occasions a bottle of sparkling wine.
In summary the hotel is mainly advertised as a 4 star or 4 star select or premium hotel but in my opinion I would give it 5 stars. This is not only for the normal reasons a hotel would earn the status, but also for the great location which I believe cannot be beaten by any other hotel in Venice (even the Cipriani you cant just walk out of your hotel and be in St Marks square in 2 minutes and you should see their rates!) but also the excellent service from the staff and the experience they help you achieve whilst being in probably one of the best cities in the world.
Would we go again? Were already saving to go back!

If you want to pay for a luxury hotel with a location that's hard to beat, this is it. We would stay here again. Excellent, comfortable stay. We ate a superb dinner on the dining room terrace. It was expensive, but reasonable for the very high quality of the food and service .

top

Excellent location 2 minutes from the bottom of St Mark's Square and 15 seconds from the San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stop. The bedrooms are very nice but the hotel lacks atmosphere. Nobody ever drinks in the hotel bar. The canal-side restaurant is romantic and good but it's expensive and over-rated. Despite my reservations I would recommend this hotel, particularly for its location which is brilliant.

top

The hotel may seem rather expensive, but it is so centrally situated that a lot of money is saved in fares and needless wandering around Venice's extremely narrow alleys.

top

A brief tour and explanation of the Hotel's history would have been really interesting.
Breakfast very efficient with fantastic views but a little unimaginative in terms of content.
Thank you so much for the complementary prosecco to celebrate our Honeymoon

top

We loved the hotel and location and would stay here again. Our only complaint is that the bed was very hard and not comfortable. Service was excellent.

Our fifth visit to Venice and my favourite hotel so far.

top

This hotel was wonderful! It is an amazing location in Venice - right on the water, one minute from St Mark's and opposite Harry's Bar! The pictures on the website do not do the hotel justice - the interiors are beautiful and luxurious. I had a 'superior' single room and it was very comfortable, and (at the time of my travel, in January) the prices were very reasonable for such a lovely hotel. Reception staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. Everything about my stay was perfect - I would definitely go again. Thank you Hotel Monaco!

top

The website contains very little practical information (e.g. regarding the animals) and does not fully reflect the excellent service we receive in Hotel Monaco Grand Canal.
We come for the second time to the hotel and we are very pleased with the service offered by the employees of the hotel, the restaurant and the bar.
The breakfast arrangements are not very clear (i.e. continental vs. a la carte items), but it's not a big minus when you are enjoying laguna views.
We were positively surprised with decoration and space of the room.
Our top two favourites are the service (also the smoking bar) and the position of the hotel.

top

This hotel before its expansion and refurbishment offered a considerably warmer environment and was far more charming. However in its present post war neutral/modern style, it is a cut above the average for Venice and a bargain at the price.

top

the shower failed to work properly! The service at brekfast was slow and reluctant - the spremute - which should mean freshly squeezed' was from a packet - horrible! I have used this hotel 5 or 6 times a year for the last few years - things are getting worse and as one of the staff told me - they are full every night, so they don't to bother. It begins to show!

top

Beautiful place right in the hub of the activities. Pricey, but excellent food and service. First class hotel and restaurant. Outside dining overlooks the grand Canal. Fun watching the gondolas, water buses and activities from the dining table. Awesome place!
